NCFHS’ 2025 annual meeting will be held on November 8, 2025 at Marlboro Friends Meeting, located at 2668 Marlboro Church Road, Sophia, NC 27350. Please arrive at 9:30 a.m. for light refreshments and conversation, then the business meeting will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a fascinating presentation by Don Farlow.
Don is the preeminent Randolph County history scholar, equally well versed in Quaker history and general Randolph and northern Montgomery County history as well. Don provided this synopsis of his prepared remarks:
Fifteen years ago, while searching for supporting evidence of my Quaker great-great-grandfather having chosen to go to the saltworks at Myrtle Grove, NC, rather than being enrolled in the Confederate Army, I began to discover numerous individuals who were members of Marlboro Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends who were imprisoned in a variety of settings during the Civil War. Some became citizen POWs of the Union. Some were placed in the guardhouse and others were tortured for failing to take up arms by the Confederate unit to which they were assigned. Many left North Carolina for the Northwest Territory or fled there after deserting the Confederate Army. Others died while being held by the Union or the Confederacy. Several of those held by their own Confederate unit are recognized as veterans of the Confederate States Army. Several of those that died at the “Andersonville of the North” are identified as “Citizen,” rather than being noted as a member of a particular company and regiment. And, at least one tortured Quaker from Marlboro was interred in an unmarked grave at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, VA and recognized as a Private, Company F, 27th Regiment, N. C. Troops.
My PowerPoint presentation at the NCFHS Annual Meeting at Marlboro Friends Meeting on November 8, 2025, will include details related to several of these Friends.

We look forward to seeing everyone there!
