</ul>]]></content></entry><entry><title>Seth and Mary Edith Hinshaw Fellowship</title><id>http://www.ncfhs.org/info-pages/seth-and-mary-edith-hinshaw-fellowship.html</id><link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://www.ncfhs.org/info-pages/seth-and-mary-edith-hinshaw-fellowship.html"/><author><name>NC Friends Historical Society</name></author><published>2011-03-16T00:09:03Z</published><updated>2011-03-16T00:09:03Z</updated><content type="html" xml:lang="en-US"><![CDATA[<p>The Seth and Mary Edith Hinshaw Fellowship provides up to $2,000 for research using the resources of the Friends Historical Collection at Guilford College to study an aspect of southern Quaker history.&nbsp; The fellowship is sponsored by the North Carolina Friends Historical Society to encourage research and use of the Friends Historical Collection.&nbsp; The recipient will be asked to present his/her research and findings at the Society's annual meeting.<br /><br />The Friends Historical Collection, located in Hege Library, is the center for the study of Quaker history in the Southeast, with particular emphasis on North Carolina. The collection is open to Guilford students and faculty, Friends, visiting scholars, and genealogical researchers.&nbsp; The collection includes the written records of Carolina Friends from 1680 to the present, printed and microfilmed copies of other Friends records, personal and family papers, the college archives, printed materials by and about Friends worldwide, and sources for the study of Quaker family history.</p>
<h3>The Fellowship</h3>
<p>We invite applications from a range of backgrounds: dissertation, post-doctoral, and non-academic. We anticipate that the most competitive applications will involve innovative projects of the many concerns to which Friends have turned their attention, including literature, women's issues, family history, and race relations, as well as religious doctrine and controversies. Applications will be evaluated according to the following criteria:</p>
<ul>
<li>demonstrated understanding of the applicability of our particular holdings to the anticipated project.</li>
<li>probability that the project will result in a product that will advance the worlds' understanding of the multiple dimensions of religion.</li>
<li>evidence of the applicant's prior familiarity with and effective use of similar collections.</li>
</ul>

<li>a three-to-five page statement of research goals, including what progress has been made to date; a statement of how this project will further greater understanding and/or scholarship by placing Southern Quaker history in the context of your subject area, an assessment of how Guilford's materials can further its progress, and an estimate of when the project is expected to be completed.</li>
<li>a current vita or resume</li>
<li>if applicant's background does not include published work, include a writing sample</li>
<li>the names and addresses of three references who are familiar with both the field in which the applicant proposes to work, and with the applicant's work. Please inform your references that they could be contacted.</li>

Poole and Seth and Mary Edith  Hinshaw.</p>
<h3>The Herbert L. Poole Award</h3>
<p>The Herbert L. Poole Award is for an outstanding paper on a topic in  southern Quaker history.&nbsp; Herbert Poole was the long-time director of  the Guilford College Hege Library and editor of The Southern Friend.&nbsp;  Both amateur and professional historians are invited to apply.&nbsp; Papers  should contribute to the greater understanding of the history of Friends  in the southeastern United States with original research and are  expected to be well written and properly documented.&nbsp; The recipient will  be granted up to $500 in recognition of their achievement and the paper  published as a lead article in a future issue of The Southern Friend:  The Journal of the North Carolina Friends Historical Society.&nbsp; Deadline  for submission is June 1, 2006.&nbsp; Submission to include two paper copies,  an electronic version sent as e-mail attachment, and a current vita  and/or biographical statement sent to the attention of the Fellowship  Committee, Friends Historical Collection, Guilford College, 5800 West  Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27410; <a href="mailto:hegefhc@guilford.edu">hegefhc@guilford.edu</a>.</p>
<h3>The Seth and Mary Edith Hinshaw Fellowship</h3>
<p>The Seth and Mary Edith Hinshaw Fellowship is for research using the  resources of the Friends Historical Collection at Guilford College to  study an aspect of southern Quaker history.&nbsp; The $2,000 fellowship is  being established to encourage research on topics relating to southern  Quaker history; award winners will be asked to present his or her  research and findings at the Society's Annual Meeting.&nbsp; Lifelong North  Carolina Quakers, the Hinshaws nurtured and sustained the efforts of  many in recording and publishing Quaker history in the south, as well as  writing and producing their own historical work through the North  Carolina Friends Historical Society among other organizations.&nbsp; <a href="../../hinshaw-fellowship/">Click here for application details.﻿</a></p>]]></content></entry><entry><title>Publications</title><id>http://www.ncfhs.org/info-pages/publications.html</id><link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://www.ncfhs.org/info-pages/publications.html"/><author><name>NC Friends Historical Society</name></author><published>2011-03-15T23:52:50Z</published><updated>2011-03-15T23:52:50Z</updated><content type="html" xml:lang="en-US"><![CDATA[<p>The North Carolina Friends Historical Society publishes a number of items, some for sale and some for free to Society members.<br /><br /><strong><em>Quaker History,</em></strong> the jointly published journal of the North Carolina Friends Historical Society and The Friends Historical Society of Philadelphia is sent biannually to all Society members free of charge.</p>
<p><strong>The Southern Friend </strong>merged with <em>Quaker History</em> in 2008 but archived issues are available. <a href="http://www.ncfhs.org/the-southern-friend/">Click here to learn more.</a></p>
<p><strong>Society Newsletters</strong> are sent to all members four times each year.&nbsp; The newsletters contain articles on topics of interest to members and provide timely notices of special events. <br /><br /><strong><em>Carolina Quakers,</em></strong> a brochure highlighting key places of Quaker history in North Carolina, printed and distributed to tourist centers around the state.<br /><br /><strong>Books and Southern Quaker meeting histories</strong> are published occasionally.&nbsp; The Society&acirc;s Publications Advisory Board handles projects from conception to printing, sometimes in conjunction with a meeting and/or a yearly meeting.</p>
